How a Riør piece is made

Made slowly. Made by hand. Made to last.

From my sketchbook to your jewelry box.

There are no shortcuts in our jewelry. No plastic flowers, no thin plating that fades after a few weeks, no endless mass production. Every Riør piece starts with one of my sketches and a flower carved by hand from genuine mother-of-pearl, and ends with a careful final check before it is wrapped for you.

Six steps to a Riør flower

Every piece passes through many careful hands before it reaches yours.

The sketch

Every design begins on paper

Each piece starts as a drawing in my sketchbook, often inspired by a flower I can't stop thinking about. We turn it into a first sample and refine it again and again, until I'm completely happy with it.

The shell

Genuine mother-of-pearl

Mother-of-pearl is the shimmering inner layer of a shell, the same natural material that forms pearls. Its soft, rainbow-like glow can't be copied by plastic, and because every shell is different, no two of our flowers are ever exactly alike.

Carved by hand

Petal by petal

Each tiny flower is carved by hand from a small piece of shell, shaping every petal one by one. It takes patience and a very steady hand, and it's what gives every flower its soft, natural look.

Polished and selected

Only the most beautiful flowers

After carving, the flowers are cleaned and polished until their natural glow comes through. Then each one is looked at closely, and only the most beautiful make it into a Riør piece.

Copper and real gold

A setting made to last

The flowers are set into a copper base. Copper is strong yet soft enough to hold the finest details, and its warmth gives the gold above it a richer glow. Each piece is thickly plated with real gold and sealed with a protective, tarnish-resistant coating.

The final check

Tested, checked and wrapped with love

Every piece goes through several quality checks before it ships, and our jewelry is regularly tested by leading laboratories for lead, nickel and cadmium. We've passed every test. Then it's placed in our signature velvet pouch, ready to be worn or gifted.
